The Garbage Fish Tournament is back for 2013 – with some changes to make it even better. This year, we are partnering with our sponsor, The Fish Hawk’s Saltwater Angler’s Club of NJ. With their help, we will continue on with the tournament that brought you cash prizes to catch our beloved trash fish: skate, dogfish, and searobin, with a new addition for 2013, the northern pufferfish, aka, Blowfish. By adding the puffers, we are opening up the tournament to our back bay fishermen who have been enjoying the banner blowfishing for the last few years and thus allowing more kids to get in on the action.

As with our last couple tournaments, the outting will run for 1 month, but this year we selected the month of August as it’s an optimal pufferfish month, along with great month to ply the waters for Skate, Dogfish and Searobin. We’ve selected our weigh stations that have had the most activity in the past tournaments. You can fish anywhere in NJ, but MUST weigh your fish at one of these participating weigh in locations. You can also register at one of these great shops, or you can register online. Registration fee is $25.00 for adults, and $10.00 for children under 12 – which qualifies them for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place cash prize in the Blowfish (northern pufferfish) category.

Rules and Regulations

Entry fee is $25.00 per angler, and $10.00 for children 12 and under. All participants must be registered 24 hours prior to weighing a fish. You cannot catch a fish, register and then weigh it in. Weigh stations will be vigilant for infractions. You may register up until 12 midnight, August 30th. Any and all fish must be weighed by closing time of any weigh station on August 31st. The only species of skate that may be weighed are the clearnose, winter, little or thorny skate. Cownose rays will not be accepted. Smooth or spiny dogfish qualify. Please take caution in identifying your shark before bringing it to weigh stations, as many species of shark are illegal to possess. Any single registered angler may weigh only one of each species per day but may weigh in multiple times throughout the month. You are permitted to fish anywhere in the state of NJ, but must weigh at one of our registered locations identified above. Frozen fish will not be accepted. Weigh stations will be vigilant in identifying fish that have been thawed. (This is a competitive but fun tournament, benefitting a great cause, so if you cheat, you suck.) You may fish only hook and line, no netting, and you are permitted to fish from boat or bank, ocean, bay, or tributaries. Any questions can be submitted to garbageman@garbagefish.com . The leader board will be updated regularly, however, the online leaderboard itself is UNOFFICIAL. Until all physical weigh slips are collected from weigh stations at the conclusion of the event, the standings will not be official, just a guideline. That being said, they are usually accurate. In the event of a tie (exact weight) the fish caught first in the tournament will win. With blowfish, we will likely see weights very close if not tied so this is the only way to farely rule a winner. The tied fish that was caught second, will be moved into the next highest placement. Please visit and support our weigh stations.
